The Client

The Sri Lankan Architecture Awards are highly regarded accolades for architecture in Sri Lanka, established by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects in 1956.

The purpose of the awards is to acknowledge and reward outstanding architectural works that demonstrate excellence in design and address the needs and aspirations of Sri Lankan communities. The awards also serve to promote and brand Sri Lankan architecture, reflecting its people, context, and construction technology. The awards are presented in various categories, including Design, Colour, Young Architect of the Year, and Socially Responsible Architecture.

The Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA) is a professional organization representing architects in Sri Lanka. Its mission is to promote and advance the architectural profession in the country. The SLIA provides a platform for architects to collaborate, share knowledge, and engage in discussions on issues related to architecture and the built environment. It also sets standards for architecture education and practice in Sri Lanka and advocates for improving the quality of the built environment.

Objectives

1. Streamline Award Submissions

The SLIA wanted to automate and streamline the awards submission process by enabling the architects to submit their projects online. Architects could log into the submission portal, make their submission and then make any necessary payments directly making the process much more quick and convenient for them.

2. Streamline the Judging Process

Previously the SLIA had a very involved process for the judging of selections. This was a multistage process which had a number of different stakeholders, meeting in one location and going through the submissions over the course of a few days. They wanted to streamline by this by bringing the judging process completely online, and to make it much more easier for the judges.

3. Increase Impartiality

By automating the judgement process, they also wanted to make it more fair and impartial. They wanted to build in mechanisms to ensure anonymity throughout the judging process, thereby making it more fair.

4. Develop an Online Showcase

They also wanted to create an online showcase where the projects of all the nominees and the winners were given prominence. The portal would also showcase winners and nominees and previous cycles.

The Challenge

The SLIA sought to enhance the awards process by automating and streamlining the submission and judging procedures.

The goal was to enable architects to submit their projects online, streamlining the process and making it more convenient for them. The judging process was also streamlined by making it completely online, simplifying it for the judges. This move aimed to increase impartiality by building in anonymity mechanisms throughout the process.

The main challenge of the project was to implement a multi-tier judging process that included eligibility evaluations, technical evaluations, and jury selections. The system had to incorporate mechanisms to ensure the anonymity of submissions to ensure fair judging.

SLIA Awards

Honoring the Best of Sri Lankan Design

SLIA Awards

The Solution

The solution comprised three modules: an Awards Submission Portal, an Award Judging and Evaluation System, and the Awards Website.

Architects submitted their projects via the portal in a standardized format required by the SLIA, ensuring uniformity in the submissions. The submissions went through various rounds of evaluations by different users until the final nominees and winners were selected by a jury of their peers. The SLIA also created an online showcase for nominees and winners to showcase their work prominently on the awards portal. This initiative aimed to promote their work and bring more visibility to Sri Lankan architecture.

Sri Lankan airlines is the flag carrier of Sri Lanka, operating to over 90 destinations from its hub of Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo.

The company was in the process of undertaking a series of process automation. This was done with a view of modernizing the airlines day to day operations, and to increase productivity. Making the emergency response procedures available through a mobile application, was one of these initiatives.

Objectives

1. Streamline emergency response procedures

Give employees access to vital information as and when they need; without having to refer manuals, improve response rates and reduce errors

2. Ensure Staff is up to date

Unlike printed manuals the app is easy to update; therefore all staff will have access to up-to-date information

3. Reduce operational expenditure

Manuals have to be reprinted on a regular basis even if minor procedural changes are made; the app will help Sri Lankan airlines in driving down printing costs

4. Improve Ground Safety

With ground staff having instant access to safety information it will improve responses times and procedures in the event of an emergency scenario

The Challenge

Previously the emergency response procedures including, guides and checklists were maintained across a set of separate documents that were provided to the relevant personnel. Accessing these documents during the case of an emergency was difficult, especially due to personnel being constantly on the move. Keeping the documentation up to date was also an arduous and expensive task that the company had to undertake from time to time.

Sri Lankan Airlines

Welcoming a convenient and speedy emergency response planning mobile application

Sri Lankan Airlines
Sri Lankan Airlines

The Solution

In order to mitigate these issues, Sri Lankan airlines tasked Encyte to enable access to these procedures using a mobile application.

Working closely together with Sri Lankan Airlines Emergency response, IT, and flight operations teams, Encyte developed a mobile application for the Android and iOS platforms. The app outlined the tasks and responsibilities of the relevant personnel and also outlined the checklists they were to abide by. In an emergency situation, users could go through these lists and mark off the actions that they have undertaken thus far. The record of their actions is stored locally on their mobile devices and this information could be used at a later occasion to determine the effectiveness of a certain individual’s response and how it could be improved in the future.

In addition to these features, the app also contained an emergency response contacts directory, which contained the up-to-date contact details of all the applicable personnel. This ensures that all personnel has access to these contact details immediately in case the need arises. Users can either search contact using the search function or browse contacts by the department in order to locate the contact they need. This adds an extra level of convenience and speed which will be vital in an emergency scenario.

Testimonial

I have had the opportunity of working together with Encyte on the implementation of an Emergency Response Procedures (ERP), mobile app solution for Sri Lankan Airlines. They developed a simple, yet robust solution, that placed a lot of emphasis on the user’s perspective (UI and UX).

Taking a significant effort to understand our exact business requirement, they tailored a solution that addressed all the issues we were seeking to mitigate. Most importantly their highly competent team was able to deliver the solution in a timely manner. It was really easy working with the guys from Encyte and I would recommend them to any other organization.

Established over six decades ago, Sri Lanka Institute of Architects is one of the premier professional institutes in Sri Lanka.

Striving with the aim of promoting the study of architecture in young architects and protecting and promoting the rights and privileges of the profession of architecture in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects continues to play a major role in the advancement of architecture in Sri Lanka.

The “Architect”, is Sri Lanka’s longest running and leading construction exhibition and tradeshow. Organized annually by the Sri Lanka Institute of Architects (SLIA), it is a marquee event in the Colombo event calendar, with tens of thousands of attendees flocking over the course of three days.

Objectives

1. Streamline floorspace selling

Move away from the current tedious manual process which is a hassle for both clients and staff, making it easy and fast to reserve stalls

2. Reduce incidences of errors

Reduce incidences of double bookings and other reservation problems that arise as a result of manual reservations creating friction with clients

3. Reduce Operational Expenditure

Reduce expenditure on hiring additional staff to manage the reservation activities

4. Increase customer satisfaction

By enabling clients to book their stalls and make payments online, the process was to be simplified for them. Thereby increasing customer satisfaction and retention

The Challenge

Since the spaces are booked manually, SLIA was met with numerous operational challenges, which have driven up costs.

Incidents of double bookings and incorrect bookings were also increasing as a result of the manual reservation processes. In addition to this revenue collection was also an area of concern, with employees having to constantly follow up with exhibitors to complete payments and confirm bookings. In certain cases, potential customers were turned away from booking spaces that were reserved but not paid for; and these spaces become available at the last minute when they are released.

SLIA

Transforming Exhibitions: From Floor Plans to Invoicing

SLIA
SLIA

The Solution

In order to overcome these issues, Encyte deployed, “Exhibit Dynamics”, an end-to-end, web-based, floor plan and exhibitor management solution designed for exhibitions, tradeshows, and conferences.

It allowed the SLIA to launch a dedicated web portal for the event, and through this enabled the reservation of booths. Exhibitors who came onto the portal were shown an interactive floor plan, with key information such as booth type, pricing, dimensions, etc. They could browse through the various areas and then simply select and purchase the booths they require, all from the portal itself. Invoicing customers, keeping track of payments, and sending payment reminders were all fully automated through Exhibit Dynamics.

It enabled the SLIA to effectively manage client and event information, saved employee time and effort, reduced duplicated work, and streamlined the floorspace selling process. The system also created intense competition for floor space between exhibitors, and the majority of the tradeshow was sold off within a few hours of the opening of the reservations. Most importantly it led to reduced operating expenditure and greater levels of customer satisfaction and retention.

With their latest expansion sought to revamp their existing website, to better connect with new and existing clients. They also wanted to effectively communicate the new range of courses and services they were offering including holiday camps and birthday parties.

Objectives

1. A Vibrant Dynamic Look

To align with the energetic, fast-paced nature of the business the site needed to portray a dynamic, vibrant feel for visitors.

2. Increasing Conversions

The new site sought to increase conversions, through the strategic placement of call-to-actions throughout the sites, as well other features such as party booking forms.

3. Making information accessible

We wanted parents to have all the information they need to make an informed decision. This was achieved through the restructuring of information to make it much easier to access.

4. Communicating the true value

We also wanted parents to get a better understanding of the true value that the programs offer; that they are not just fun but foster mental and physical prowess in kids.

The Challenge

Balancing form and function

One of the most critical matters going into this website was striking the balance between form and function. We wanted to create a fun, edgy yet upbeat digital identity for the client. This meant that the site would skew towards a more creative design. Yet at the same time, the target audience, being young and busy parents dictated that the site needed to be highly functional as well.  Our team had to ensure that not only was the site eye-catching but simple and efficient for users to navigate and find the information they are looking for quickly.

A fresh and vibrant new online home for Lil Ninja Academy.

By first creating a new digital brand identity, Encyte was able to successfully design and develop a vibrant and eye-catching site to engage visitors.

The site was yet very highly functional, with information structured strategically throughout the pages. This makes it easy for users to access and absorb relevant information. Common page structures, FAQs, key highlights, etc. were some strategies that were used to make information easier to access.

The site also boosted conversions through the strategic placement of call to actions, and other features such as booking forms, which makes it easier for parents to inquire about their upcoming events and get a quote within a short period of time.

The center of excellence in Sri Lanka for health education, health promotion, and publicity of health information.

The Health Promotion Bureau (HPB) is the center of excellence in Sri Lanka for health education, health promotion, and publicity of health information. Empowering and mobilizing communities to improve their quality of life through health promotion principles is the main achievement gained during the last few years. They are in the process of strengthening the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of its health promotion work in communities. Mother Support Groups (MSGs) is one such community program where community groups of 7 to 10 mothers are either elected by the community or selected by the Public Health Midwife and other leaders.

Mother Support Groups support health officers by mobilizing mothers to come to clinics, assisting with compliance factors such as mothers taking supplements, drawing the attention of the PHM to vulnerable mothers and children, and a host of other tasks.

Objectives

1. Strengthening the monitoring and evaluation (M&E) of its health promotion work in communities

The dashboard feature to view and monitor the activities conducted in the districts and evaluate the type of activities undertaken by each mother support community.

2. Create a visual map with community profiling in the districts

Enabling to get a clear picture of other community's activities and processes.

3. View and monitor the activities conducted in the districts and evaluate the type of activities conducted by each setting in the districts

Increase the performance and productivity of the processes by having a peek through to other community happenings.

4. Helping Health Promotion Bureau members to work and build relationships with other Mother support group members

Providing means to communicate and build relationships.

The Challenge

A reliable system to track and monitor the activities conducted by every Mother support group.

Mother support communities are spread over different districts, so it’s imperative that Health Promotion Bureau members are able to collaborate with each group as though they are in the same room in order to provide the expected support that community members are promised.

On the other hand, these community members need to work and build relationships with other Mother support group members and stay connected to maximize productivity across the teams. For this, they wanted a reliable system to track and monitor the activities conducted by every Mother support group.

Health Promotion Bureau

View and monitor the activities conducted in the districts and evaluate the type of activities undertaken by each setting in the districts.

Health Promotion Bureau

The Solution

A powerful tool to visualize data by spatial referencing, visually disseminate information, as a training tool, and link the activities with measurable public health benefits.

In the process of strengthening M&E, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is identified as a powerful tool to visualize data by spatial referencing, visually disseminate information, as a training tool, and link the activities with measurable public health benefits in communities and districts. Thus, a mobile application was developed to create a visual map with community profiling in the districts, which helps plan and monitor interventions more efficiently.

One of the reasons that the developed mobile application is successful is due to its dashboard feature to view and monitor the activities conducted in the districts and evaluate the type of activities undertaken by each setting in the districts.

Multiple data points were used to track and monitor the mother support groups over time to ensure goals and objectives were met. All of these were achieved through a detailed process of mapping, planning, auditing, and information sharing regularly and now exist as a strategy to evaluate the type of activities conducted by each setting in the districts.

Keeping in line with the primary objectives, they wanted the site to be a resource center where they could share knowledge on development issues.

4. Make sure that Citra Labs website is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities

Another crucial aspect was to ensure that the site was an inclusive space where all types of users were welcome.

The Challenge

Citra Labs’ previous website did not sufficiently communicate the projects and Citra Labs body of work.

Therefore, website visitors didn’t have much of an understanding as to what type of work Citra Lab was involved in.

The previous website was also not very aesthetically appealing to website visitors. As Citra Lab is an organization working closely with the youth, Citra Lab wanted to have a fresh and more dynamic feeling website, having easier navigation.

The previous site had a lack of accessibility options and was not easily accessible by those with certain disabilities such as visual impairments.
