The Client

Sri Lanka’s first Social Innovation Lab established as a joint initiative between the State Ministry of Skills Development, Vocational Education, Research and Innovation, and the United Nations Development Programme to address the country’s key development issues by bringing together the youth and working on prototyping and testing social innovation solutions.

Being Sri Lanka’s first design lab, Citra Lab’s main goal is to establish environmentally feasible trials on a smaller scale to identify possible defects and rectify these flaws before implementing them on a nationwide scale. By doing so, Citra Lab ensures that extensive and effective solutions are developed by using their foresight and innovative tools. They leverage speedy prototyping facilities that take into account various alternative future rundowns to create agile and comprehensive solutions through a citizen-centered approach.

Further, with the help of Citra Labs, key stakeholders from various areas of expertise including Sociology, Digital Design, Data Science, Behavioral Psychology, etc. study the development issues and solutions to enable prototyping within the first year. One landmark project included modeling a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) panel which would provide a complete overview of the present-day context of each of the SDGs in Sri Lanka.

Objectives

1. Develop an online platform to showcase Citra Labs past work

They wanted to have an online showcase of the of their key projects; to demonstrate their work and the areas they are active in.

2. Give the website a more modern, user-friendly, and fresh look

A crucial aspect of the site was to make the website more vibrant and appeal to the target youth audience.

3. Share knowledge and knowhow in the areas that Citra Lab is working on

Keeping in line with the primary objectives, they wanted the site to be a resource center where they could share knowledge on development issues.

4. Make sure that Citra Labs website is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities

Another crucial aspect was to ensure that the site was an inclusive space where all types of users were welcome.

The Challenge

Citra Labs’ previous website did not sufficiently communicate the projects and Citra Labs body of work.

Therefore, website visitors didn’t have much of an understanding as to what type of work Citra Lab was involved in.

The previous website was also not very aesthetically appealing to website visitors. As Citra Lab is an organization working closely with the youth, Citra Lab wanted to have a fresh and more dynamic feeling website, having easier navigation.

The previous site had a lack of accessibility options and was not easily accessible by those with certain disabilities such as visual impairments.
